Question by sophiasgr8: Confused by B-12 info?
I haven’t been feeling good tired, thinking was very fuzzy generally cruddy. I figured out I wasn’t getting enough important nutrients so I am setting out to correct this. With some dietary changes and more supplements I can tell the difference already in the way I am feeling. I really didn’t read up enough before trying to start changing to a vegetarian diet. I am reading away now!

I keep reading articles that state vegetarian/vegan sources of B-12 are not readily absorbed by the body and how important B-12 is. They say eat fortified products to get your B-12 I see lots of implication that this fortified B-12 comes from animal sources. I am confused about how you can get enough B-12 on a completely vegetarian diet. I am pescatarian (with the goal of eventually becoming vegetarian) but I eat majority vegetarian foods. I am interested in eventually doing what I can to pursue more vegan style eating. Do some people just cut all meat out except for animal sourced B-12? I’ve seen Red Star Nutritional Yeast mentioned where’s the B-12 coming from in it? How do you keep your body from becoming overwhelmed by the yeast? Especially if you’re a woman too much yeast isn’t good thing.

Here is part of an article I read tonight:
HOW IS VITAMIN B12 MADE?

B12 is made by fungi, algae and especially bacteria in soil and water, and to a slight degree bacteria in the stomach. Animals get their B12 from this food and water which is contaminated with these microorganisms. These animals then become a source of vitamin B12 when humans consume their flesh and by-products.

Some plant foods have been reported to contain vitamin B12, but are not known to be reliable sources of this vitamin. Tiny amounts of vitamin B12 have been found in some plants treated with manure but the amounts are too small to be a sufficient source of the vitamin.

WHERE DO WE FIND IT AND WHAT ABOUT VEGAN VITAMIN B12?

The only reliable unfortified sources of vitamin B12 are meat, dairy products and eggs – a health hazzard – therefore, vegans need to get their vegan vitamin B12 from fortified food products such as soya milk, nutritional yeast (which makes lovely tasting cheesy sauces – Red Star Vegetarian Support Formula nutritional yeast is a staple in most vegan kitchens. This product tastes great and around 1 tablespoon supplies the RDA you need for vitamin B12), vegan margarines and cereals.

Vegans need to look for fortified foods or supplements to get vegan vitamin B12 in their diet. Although the required amount is very small, as you can see from above, a deficiency of it can cause serious problems. Vitamin B12 is also very important in pregnancy and for children.

What Does Vitamin B12 Do With Folic Acid?

The body needs B12 and folic acid to optimize red cell regrowth and if there is a lack of one or more of these nutrients, anaemia will develop.

B12 and folic acid work together for maximum effect in supplying new red blood cells and can improve or remove B12 deficiency.

Adults need around 400 micrograms of folic acid per day and according to the NIH (National Institues of Health), healthy people should have no more than 1,000 micrograms per day as large amounts can trigger the damaging effects of a B12 deficiency. Vegan foods contain folic acid but there are vitamin B12 supplements which also contain this vitamin. Some people may choose one of these dual action supplements to maximize their B12 intake.
I eat tempeh about twice a week eggs maybe once a week(if that I have been cutting back on them), dairy a few times a week. Where do most fortified sources of B-12 come from in foods?

Best answer:

Answer by TeziStarr (☮&♥)
Ovo-lacto vegetarians shouldn’t have much of a problem. Eggs and dairy are both good sources of B12.
I’m a vegan woman, and my favorite source of B12 is nutritional yeast. I can understand where you’re coming from with the too much yeast comment, but I don’t really have problems with it. Well, then again, I do limit my intake. I also have fortified almond milk (most faux “milk” have B12-fortified versions) and once every so often I’ll have some fortified cereal. I’ve taken blood tests, and my B12 levels aren’t low (nor are any others).

Edit;; Just saw your update. B12 in fortified products comes from a type of bacteria.

Question by Jackie Blue: What are the most nutrional foods for cancer patients?
I am trying to help a friend that has cancer, make a list of the most nutritional, high in anti oxidant foods AND drinks to purchase. They have been going through chemo and will begin radiation soon for small cell lung cancer. I know of some foods that have high anti-oxidants, but I want to make sure I give them a complete list of the best foods and drinks they should be consuming during this time, for maximum health benefits of anti oxidants. Any herb or supplements that may be beneficial as well? Please list brand names when you can. Thank you for taking time to help.

Best answer:

Answer by Sensible and in Moderation
Though there’s newer conflicting research, most doctors continue to advise their chemo patients not to take in supplemental antioxidants during active chemo. But here’s the top ten foods or supplements in order of their ORAC values–I copied and pasted from Dr Ronald Hoffman’s website.

Quote:

Top antioxidant foods are rated according to their ORAC values. ORAC or “”Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity” is an internationally recognized way to measure antioxidant levels.

Blueberries, blackberries, pomegranates, prunes, and raisins all make the top ten.

Vitamin C was made the list, but it only rated #7.

But the top three in ascending order of ORAC values are (drum roll please!): #3 grapeseed extract; #2 green tea extract; and the undisputed #1 champion–olive leaf extract.

End Quote

Question by yahoo: What do you think about the Government placing a literal ban on Vitamins and Minerals?
What do you think of this, if this goes in effect on December 31st 2009, we can say bye bye to nutrition or eating healthy…

Here’s the article:

Public Meeting to Address Agenda Items for the 32nd Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission
Congressional and Public Affairs
(202) 720-9113
Alexandra Tarrant

Codex Alimentarius (World Food Code)
Summarized in 7 Points

HealthFreedomUSA.org, the website of the Natural Solutions Foundation, is beholden to no one: our only interest is health freedom. Rima E. Laibow, MD, successful natural medicine physician since the 1970s, has studied 16,000 pages of Codex documentation. Her conclusion is that people who say that Codex is consumer protection, voluntary, or harmless are, at best, seriously mistaken. Codex Alimentarius will go into global implementation by December 31, 2009, unless We, the People, avert it.

1) Started in 1962 by UN, Imposed by WTO Sanctions

Codex Alimentarius was created in 1962 as a trade Commission by the UN to control the international trade of food. Its initial intentions may have been altruistic but it has been taken over by corporate interests, most notably the pharmaceutical, pesticide, biotechnology and chemical industries. Monsanto and Bayer are big proponents. Being a member country of Codex means that this organization decides what we eat. Codex Alimentarius is backed up by the crippling trade sanctions of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Any non Codex-compliant nation would face huge economic punishment since they would automatically lose in any food-trade dispute with a Codex compliant country.
2) Nutrients Classified as Toxins Based on Junk Science

Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has two committees which impact nutrition.

One of them, the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU), is chaired by Dr. Rolf Grossklaus, a physician who believes that nutrition has no role in health. This is the top-guy for Codex nutritional policy, and he has stated that nutrition is not relevant to health.

As unbelievable as it may sound, Dr. Grossklaus actually declared nutrients to be toxins in 1994 and instituted the use of toxicology (Risk Assessment) to prevent nutrients from having any impact on humans who take supplements! It is worth mentioning that Dr. Grossklaus happens to own the Risk Assessment company advising CCNFSDU and Codex on this issue. This company makes money when its toxicology services are used for the assessment of nutrients. Here in the U.S. we call that a conflict of interest.

Codex is made up of thousands of standards and guidelines. One of them, the Vitamin and Mineral Guideline (VMG), is designed to permit only ultra low doses of vitamins and minerals (and make clinically effective nutrients illegal). How can the VMG restrict dosages of vitamins and minerals? By using Risk Assessment (toxicology) to assess nutrients.

While Risk Assessment is a legitimate science (it is a branch of toxicology), it is the wrong science for assessing nutrients! In fact, in this context, it is actually junk science. Biochemistry, the science of life processes, is the correct science for assessing nutrients. Codex Alimentarius treats nutrients as toxins, which is literally insane. Nutrients are not toxins – they are essential for life.

No matter what Codex Alimentarius officials say to convince you that Risk Assessment is a science-based approach to nutrients, it is not.

And it is worth repeating that Dr. Grossklaus, the head of Codex Alimentarius, owns the Risk Assessment c

Best answer:

Answer by Beachgirl
wtf? that is insane.

Codex Alimentarius Summarized in 7 Points
There is much misinformation about Codex Alimentarius on the internet, and we have endeavoured to check our sources of information to bring you the most correct data possible. If you have any specific questions or queries you can email us at our email address here.

Codex Alimentarius is most important to understand as it will have very serious impact in longer-term, especially if the risk assessment system that it proposes to use to establish maximum allowed dosages is not changed over the coming months.

With the Codex Alimentarius Commission set to put in place international standards we could see:

The degradation and undermining of organic standards so that “organic food” can contain various chemical additives and processing aids.

Flagrant disregard of their own directive to protect consumer safety by setting standards that allow for significant residues of pesticides in foods (as much as 3275 including those that are suspected carcinogens or endocrine disrupters)

An understatement of nutritional requirements for long term optimum health of the consumers it seeks to protect by setting unnecessarily low Nutrient Reference Values

The forcing of therapeutic grade vitamins and minerals to be reclassified as drugs by default by setting very low maximum level dosages for supplements using flawed risk assessment methods

The way paved for implementation of GM food plants and GM animals by arguing that world food requirements cannot be met without global implementation of GM animals

World agricultural populations economically vulnerable to crop failures during natural disasters, droughts or floods by approving “Terminator” seeds for international trade
If we allow Codex to implement these strategies eventually:

The world population will not know what it is eating
The world population will not know why it is getting sick
The world population will not have access to information, natural nutrients or natural medicines that can make it well

Codex Use Junk Science to Declare that “Nutrients are Toxins”

The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has two committees which impact nutrition. One of them is the “Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses” (CCNFSDU). The host government for this committee is non other than the Federal Republic of Germany!

This committee is chaired by the Dr. Rolf Grossklaus, a German physician who believes that nutrition has no role in health. This is the “head hauncho” for Codex nutritional policy, and he has stated that “nutrition is not relevant to health”.

In 1994, as “barking mad” as it may sound, Dr. Grossklaus has also instituted the use of toxicology (Risk Assessment) to prevent nutrients from having any therapeutic impact on humans who take supplements in the name of “Public Safety”! The science of toxicology or Risk Assessment is the current method for assessing pharmaceutical drugs and is completely absurd and unscientific to apply to nutrients.

Question by B: what does this mean about sugar?
Health Issues: Simple sugars have been documented to contribute to and/or aggravate health problems, including: asthma, mood disorders, mental illness, nervous disorders, diabetes, heart disease, gallstones, hypertension, and arthritis.
Insulin Impacts: Sugar raises insulin levels, inhibiting the release of growth hormones which depresses the immune system. Further, too much insulin promotes the storage of fat, so that when you eat foods that are high in sugar, you’re enabling rapid weight gain and elevated triglyceride levels, both of which have been linked to cardiovascular disease.
Degenerative Disease: Sugar has no real nutritional value (minerals, vitamins and fiber) and as a result, has a deteriorating effect on the endocrine system, causing sugar consumption to be one of the 3 major causes of degenerative disease.
Cancer Culprits: Turns out that cancer’s preferred fuel is none other than glucose. Controlling one’s blood-glucose levels through diet, exercise, supplements, meditation and prescription drugs – when necessary – can be extremely important to a cancer treatment program.

Question by Pineapple: what is your favorite food??
Pineapple
Pineapples have exceptional juiciness and a vibrant tropical flavor that balances the tastes of sweet and tart. They are second only to bananas as America’s favorite tropical fruit. Although the season for pineapple runs from March through June, they are available year-round in local markets.

Pineapples are a composite of many flowers whose individual fruitlets fuse together around a central core. Each fruitlet can be identified by an “eye,” the rough spiny marking on the pineapple’s surface. Pineapples have a wide cylindrical shape, a scaly green, brown or yellow skin and a regal crown of spiny, blue-green leaves and fibrous yellow flesh. The area closer to the base of the fruit has more sugar content and therefore a sweeter taste and more tender texture.

This chart graphically details the %DV that a serving of Pineapple provides for each of the nutrients of which it is a good, very good, or excellent source according to our Food Rating System. Additional information about the amount of these nutrients provided by Pineapple can be found in the Food Rating System Chart. A link that takes you to the In-Depth Nutritional Profile for Pineapple, featuring information over 80 nutrients, can be found under the Food Rating System Chart.

Health Benefits

Potential Anti-Inflammatory and Digestive Benefits

Bromelain is a complex mixture of substances that can be extracted from the stem and core fruit of the pineapple. Among dozens of components known to exist in this crude extract, the best studied components are a group of protein-digesting enzymes (called cysteine proteinases). Originally, researchers believed that these enzymes provided the key health benefits found in bromelain, a popular dietary supplement containing these pineapple extracts. In addition, researchers believed that these benefits were primarily limited to help with digestion in the intestinal tract. However, further studies have shown that bromelain has a wide variety of health benefits, and that many of these benefits may not be related to the different enzymes found in this extract. Excessive inflammation, excessive coagulation of the blood, and certain types of tumor growth may all be reduced by therapeutic doses of bromelain when taken as a dietary supplement. Studies are not available, however, to show these same potential benefits in relationship to normal intake of pineapple within a normal meal plan.

Bromelain extracts can be obtained from both the fruit core and stems of pineapple. Potentially important chemical differences appear to exist between extracts obtained from the stem versus the core fruit. However, the practical relevance of these differences is not presently understood. Most of the laboratory research on bromelain has been conducted using stem-based extracts, however.

Although healthcare practitioners have reported improved digestion in their patients with an increase in pineapple as their “fruit of choice” within a meal plan, we haven’t seen published studies that document specific changes in digestion following consumption of the fruit (versus supplementation with the purified extract. However, we suspect that the core fruit will eventually turn out to show some unique health-supportive properties, including possible digestion-related and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Antioxidant Protection and Immune Support

Vitamin C is the body’s primary water-soluble antioxidant, defending all aqueous areas of the body against free radicals that attack and damage normal cells. Free radicals have been shown to promote the artery plaque build-up of atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease, cause the airway spasm that leads to asthma attacks, damage the cells of the colon so they become colon cancer cells, and contribute to the joint pain and disability seen in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. This would explain why diets rich in vitamin C have been shown to be useful for preventing or reducing the severity of all of these conditions. In addition, vitamin C is vital for the proper function of the immune system, making it a nutrient to turn to for the prevention of recurrent ear infections, colds, and flu.

Manganese and Thiamin (Vitamin B1) for Energy Production and Antioxidant Defenses

Pineapple is an excellent source the trace mineral manganese, which is an essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses. For example, the key oxidative enzyme superoxide dismutase, which disarms free radicals produced within the mitochondria (the energy production factories within our cells), requires manganese. Just one cup of fresh pineapple supplies 128.0% of the DV for this very important trace mineral. In addition to manganese, pineapple is a good source of thiamin, a B vitamin that acts as a cofacto

Question by Stephanie: Can you get too many vitamins?
I’ve had very little experience with proper amounts of vitamins, and with eating healthy in general. I currently take Centrum multivitamins with these nutritional facts:

http://www.amazon.com/Centrum-Advanced-Multivitamin-Multimineral-Supplement/dp/nutrition-facts/B000HCV8TI/ref=gronf_njs_1/104-9689690-0528755

and I would also like to replace my currently unhealthy breakfasts with this:

http://www.slim-fast.com/products/product_info.asp?product_id=694

and a daily snack after school with this (which means I would go through about a box of six every week):

http://www.slim-fast.com/products/product_info.asp?product_id=692

Is this healthy? Is there a such thing as getting too much of any of the vitamins in these items? Is there anything essential to my health that I will be missing?

I know that was a lot to ask in one question, but feel free to answer partially. Even that much would help.
