Can you get too many vitamins?

Question by Stephanie: Can you get too many vitamins?
I’ve had very little experience with proper amounts of vitamins, and with eating healthy in general. I currently take Centrum multivitamins with these nutritional facts:

http://www.amazon.com/Centrum-Advanced-Multivitamin-Multimineral-Supplement/dp/nutrition-facts/B000HCV8TI/ref=gronf_njs_1/104-9689690-0528755

and I would also like to replace my currently unhealthy breakfasts with this:

and a daily snack after school with this (which means I would go through about a box of six every week):

Is this healthy? Is there a such thing as getting too much of any of the vitamins in these items? Is there anything essential to my health that I will be missing?

I know that was a lot to ask in one question, but feel free to answer partially. Even that much would help.

Absolutely – especially vitamin E (and other lipid soluble vitamins).. Water soluble vitamins like vitamin C are easy to lose through excretion so they are not as large a problem. In general, take the recommended dose – not more.

Yes, you can take too much of fat soluble vitamins, such as Vitamin A. An overdose of Vitamin A can kill you, and it is supposedly a very horrible death.(Nausea, peeling skin, hair loss, seizures.) Iron, calcium and folic acid can cause problems in large amounts.

you can damage your liver if too much of certain ones…or get spikes on your bones with too much calcium…painful !

Other than vitamin A, the rest of the vitamins just wash out through your system. Too much vitamin A can make your eyes turn yellow/orange and damage your liver.

What you are suggesting eating is fine. I assume you want to lose a few pounds before the holidays. I applaud you. Good luck.

Some vitamins are fat soluble and some are water soluble. With the info you’ve provided you’re fine with eating this way. Youre probably even helping yourself prevent some cancers and diseases down the road. With what you’re doing you are not mega dosing so don’t worry. Keep up your healthy eating making sure to get plenty of water daily and exercise and you’re all set! If you don’t eat fish at least 3 times a week you might want to add a fish oil or flax oil supplement only for the extra protection against heart disease and some cancers. Also they make your hair and skin look great!
