Do you guys not know what WIC is?

Question by SinDelle Morte: Do you guys not know what WIC is?
I see a lot of answerers on here that seem to think WIC is welfare. It isn’t. It isn’t even in the same division as welfare; you don’t get it from Social Services or whatever. You have to go to the Health Department. WIC doesn’t give ANY money. WIC stands for “Women, Infants and Children” and it is a nutritional supplement program. They don’t give money at all. They give WIC checks for food, with the food they will pay for already written on them, certain kinds of:

Baby Formula
Baby Juice
Milk
Cereal
Eggs
Peanut Butter or Dried Beans
Cheese

And that’s it. They don’t give money at all. You can only get the EXACT kind of product they specify and only the EXACT size. And a family only qualifies if they meet the income guidelines and have a child under 5.

And just because someone gets WIC doesn’t mean they get food stamps or welfare. The income guidelines for WIC are a little higher (or lower, depending on how you look at it) because it is a nutritional program, not a financial aid program. It’s like 2 gallons of milk and a couple small boxes of cereal (or one big one), cheese, a small bottle of juice, peanut butter and some eggs a month. That’s it.

I don’t get WIC but I know it is a great help to some, such as families whose babies are on prescription formula which can cost anywhere from $ 20 – $ 50 a can. It isn’t welfare and just because someone qualifies for WIC doesn’t mean they get food stamps or anything else. Not at all.
Offering nothing in return would mean that the person receiving WIC is not working, correct? Seeing as how the income guidelines for WIC are like $ 40,000.00/yr. for a family of 4, I don’t think that fits in with your definition. It’s a NUTRITIONAL program, like I said. Think you could get food stamps or welfare making that kind of money? I don’t think so. You can’t get welfare or ANY assistance if you have even a part-time job making $ 6.00/hr. At least not here.

Ok, start by dissecting the claims.

Claim
U.S. entrepreneurial legends running this thing and they have made $ 1.5 billion in their last two businesses.
Think about this. If their last two ventures were so successful then why are they running their successful ventures? Investigate these people and their businesses. I would not be suprised if you found that the businesses were not that successful or that there might have been some legal problems with them.

Claim
The liquid supplement was featured in Esquire magazine.
How? Was it an article? Was it a paid ad? Big difference there. Was it in there at all? Can the person making the claim give information as to what month and year this feature happened.

Claim
Top distributors in the U.S. and 43 other countries earning up to $ 75,000 a month or more in our lucrative two team (binary) compensation plan that pays weekly!
First of all, that is idiotic. That means that there are people out there earning $ 900,000 a year selling this stuff and it is not a well known product. If there were people legitimately making this kind of money selling a product then there should be all kinds of articles about it. The product should be pretty famous in the US.

Claim
Over 2500 people have joined in the first few weeks!
This is a marketing ploy. Making it seem like everyone is wanting to get in on this. However, just because 2500 people have jumped in on this does not mean it is a good idea. Given the size of Delhi, it would not be too hard to find 2500 idiots. Also, there is no way to verify this number. They could have just made it up.

Top positions in my 2 teams are going fast
Cheap salesman tactic to make it seem like there is some urgency to jump on board. This makes a person anxious and that person will not be willing to investigate further because investigation takes time. Have you ever heard a used car salesman say that someone else was looking at that same car you are looking at just earlier that day?

I have known many people who have tried MLMs (legal and otherwise). I have never known one to be successful at it.

Q&A: Amantadine for parrots?

Question by MarkSouthFL: Amantadine for parrots?
My sun conure is being treated for gout, and after two months of medication (gout medicine and nutritional supplement for liver), he got a generally clean bill of health, as his uric acid levels are back to normal. However, the vet wants me to continue the nutritional supplement and also prescribed amantadine.

I looked on the Web for information on amantadine and found that in Western countries its use is limited to humans. It has been used on chickens in China to combat avian flu, which has led to concern over its effectiveness against avian flu in humans, but I can’t find any mention of use in parrots. In humans, it is also used in treating Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and ADHD, but none of these apply to my bird.

I should mention that my vet specializes in avian medicine and is highly regarded. I will call him to ask about this tomorrow, but I thought I would see if anyone else can shed some light on this. I’ll pass along what I learn in the additional comments.
Update: Called the vet’s office today, and was told it was for the tremors which the doctor had noticed during the exam. Essentially, it is related to the use for Parkinson’s, which Cisco doesn’t have, but the symptoms are treated the same.

There are a number of ‘human’ medications that are regularly used on parrots & have been for a number of years. Most of these meds are never mentioned on the net as a regular use for parrots, especially if they’re not used often.

Did you ask what this med was specifically for with your sun conure? If you’re in doubt about it you can always phone one or two other avian vets & give them your birds vet care info & ask them what they think of this drug being used on your bird.

My nephew is considering becoming a vegan. Both he and I are concerned about how the diet will affect him.?

Question by nice guy: My nephew is considering becoming a vegan. Both he and I are concerned about how the diet will affect him.?
We have been told that a low fat vegan diet can lead to reduced testosterone levels and cause significant problems with hormones. At first we thought these were just some sort of scare tactics but after researching have found that these claims are in fact valid. That’s pretty scary stuff. And we are also concerned with the other obvious nutritional deficiencies in the diet and would like to know what vitimans and supplements he should be taking. I think becoming a vegan is a noble thing, but do not think it is worth risking ones own health to become one. I would like for people to share with me the problems and dificiencies that they have endured as a result of the vegan diet so that my nephew can potentially avoid them if he does in fact decide to go vegan. I will appreciate your input. I have read many of the answers in this forum and have always been impressed with how helpful people are. I look forward to insight provided by the many thoughtful vegans in this forum.

If he learns his nutritional properties properly you’ve got no worries. Yes, it probably will reduce his testosterone levels a little-simply because he won’t be getting all the hormones from the dead flesh he eats.

There is no age restriction on protein powder. Its going to be gross if you mix it with water. You’re better off doing some water, ice, yogurt anda piece of fruit like a banana in a blender. MUCH better!

Q&A: Vegetarians only please!?

Question by Uhgggg….: Vegetarians only please!?
I need to interview a vegetarian but i don’t know any personally!!! Anyone who could answer these questions I would greatly appreciate it!!

1. How is a vegetarian diet nutritionally balanced?
2. What are the main concerns when planning menus?
3. Do you need to take a nutritional supplement? Why? What type of supplement and what type of vitamins and minerals does it contain?
4. What are the health advantages of being a vegetarian?
5. What are some of the disadvantages of following a vegetarian diet?

Best answer:

Answer by Chelsea
1: So long as someone eats a wide variety of real, whole food, they will most likely get all of their nutrients.

2: The biggest concerns are probably protein, iron, and zinc (along with B12 and calcium if the individual is a vegan.) Like I said, though, eating a sufficient amount and wide variety of food will provide you with all the nutrients you need. Other than nutrients, the biggest concern is making sure everything is animal-free.

3: I do not take any vitamins or supplements. It’s unnecessary. I get everything I need through food and water.

4: Health advantages don’t come so much from being a vegetarian as they do from eating a healthy, well balanced diet. Vegetarian foods tend to be, but are not necessarily, low in unhealthy fats and cholesterol, and a vegetarian diet promotes eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

5: Again, it’s not from being a vegetarian but from having a poorly planned diet that causes the disadvantages to arise. Some individuals rely too heavily on starchy carbs, fatty dairy foods, or over-processed mock meats when becoming a vegetarian. This obviously is detrimental to their health. Others don’t eat a wide enough variety of foods and end up lacking some nutrients. While many people associate protein deficiency with vegetarianism, it’s far more common for someone to not eat enough iron (probably because they’re too busy trying to eat enough protein.) It’s easy enough to avoid, but for some individuals (especially females with heavy menstrual flows) it can be a bit more challenging. I for one pay absolutely no attention to where I get my iron, yet my blood count is always fine.

Q&A: Breastfeeding and fingernail growth?

Question by PF32: Breastfeeding and fingernail growth?
My 16month baby and I are both in good health, however my fingernails are barely growing at all. I have breastfed from my baby’s birth and she has always been in 95% for height. I try to take my prenatal vitamins but do not always take them everyday.

Have any of you experienced retarded nail growth with breastfeeding and do you have any nutritional/diet/supplement/heath advice to get them to grow better? My toenails seem to grow just fine.

You need to take those prenatals EVERY day. This is your health we are talking about. I know how easy it is to forget but make it a priority. Put it next to your toothpaste so you see it daily.
